Luisa Maria Navares Buford, age 84, died peacefully at home in Mobile, AL on November 23, 2016. Luisa, aka “Lou” and “G-Lou”, was born June 8, 1932, in Los Angeles, CA. Preceded in death by her parents, Antonio Mutas and Remedios (“Meding”) Monteclaro Navares of the Philippine Islands, her sister Natividad (“Naty”) Navares Palicte, and brother, Antonio M. Navares, Jr.

Luisa Maria Navares Buford, age 84, died peacefully at home in Mobile, AL on November 23, 2016. Luisa, aka “Lou” and “G-Lou”, was born June 8, 1932, in Los Angeles, CA. Preceded in death by her parents, Antonio Mutas and Remedios (“Meding”) Monteclaro Navares of the Philippine Islands, her sister Natividad (“Naty”) Navares Palicte, and brother, Antonio M. Navares, Jr.



Lou is survived by her husband, James (Jim) Buford, Sr., son, Rey Versola (Karen) of Johns Creek, GA, son, James (Jimmy) Buford, Jr. (Cindy) of Union Grove, AL, daughter, Faye Buford Stewart (Kenny) of Mobile, AL, son, Michael Buford (Anna) of Spanish Fort, AL and 11 grandchildren: Christopher Versola, Matt Versola, Ben Versola, Brady Buford, Ryan Buford, Jackson Stewart, Rhiannon Buford, Megan Buford, Regan Buford, Madalyn Buford, and Maksim Buford. Lou is also survived by brother-in-law Joe Palicte and nephew Bruce Palicte, her nieces, Denise Palicte Academia, Janice Palicte (Rich), and RoseAnn Palicte Anderson (Bruce). Lou will also be missed by many other loving relatives from the Buford, Navares, and Versola families.



Lou grew up in Los Angeles in the Catholic Church surrounded by her Filipino family and friends. She learned to play the violin at age 4 and later mastered the piano. She was an excellent student and avid softball player (catcher) during her school years and graduated from Belmont High School in 1950. Lou married the love of her life, Jim, on January 31, 1964 in Santa Barbara, CA. They lived the military life, moving to multiple states and locations before retiring in 1978 to Mobile, AL. Lou worked for the Mobile County Personnel Board until she retired after 20 years of service. As the Receptionist, Lou was known for her friendly, calm, and professional telephone voice: “Hello, Mobile County Personnel Board. This is Mrs. Buford speaking. How can I help you?” Lou loved spending time with family and friends. She was sincerely invested in everyone’s lives, showering all with love and caring thoughts. Lou was a talented artist and card maker, both in words and pictures. She left a legacy cherished by all she knew.



Funeral services will be held at Pine Crest Funeral Home & Cemetery, 1939 Dauphin Island Parkway, Mobile AL, 36605 on Monday, November 28, 2016. Private visitation (family) at 12:30 pm and public viewing during 1:00 -2:00 pm. Chapel service at 2:00 pm will be followed by graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Mrs. Luisa M. Buford to the American Diabetes Association.
